The new First-Time Buyer ISA: what we know so far

4 minute read · Updated November 2026

The October 2026 Budget confirmed a new First-Time Buyer ISA from April 2029. Here's what's been announced, and what it means if you're saving now.

The headline details

As announced
StartsApril 2029
Who can open oneAge 18+, no upper age limit
Yearly limit£4,000
Government bonus25%, up to £20,000 in total
Property price cap£450,000

How it differs from the Lifetime ISA

  • No upper age limit to open, unlike the Lifetime ISA's under-40 rule
  • The bonus is paid on the final balance, including interest and growth, when you buy
  • It's for first homes only, with no retirement option

What if I'm saving now?

Don't wait until 2029. If you're 18 to 39, a Lifetime ISA is still available and you can keep using it after 2029. You can't transfer between the two, but both can be used towards the same purchase.

Still to be confirmed

Full rules, including what happens if you withdraw for another reason, will follow before launch. We'll update this guide when they're published.
